Repaint the Mirror

by Sandy Crow

They tell us we need to change. TV, magazines, billboards, the mall, the internet…the message is everywhere: “You’re not good enough.” They told us nobody’s perfect, so sin is acceptable. They also told us we need to be perfect, so we have to dedicate our time to dieting and clearing our complexions.

We told them: “No! There’s so much more to life than your superficial message.”

But then we noticed the prettier girls in this world…and in comparison, our own imperfections. We noticed the prettier boys in this world…and suddenly wanted to repaint our mirrors.

We say Jesus is always enough, and we don’t need to be what the world shows us. But if you look at our lives, do we honestly believe that?

The undeniable truth is, no one can be perfect. The real ugliness we all fight is in our hearts, the chains Christ ripped apart. He pulled us out of the darkness and set us on our feet again, He was perfect when we couldn’t be, He suffered what we deserve, He gave up His life for us so that we could live forever.

And we want more. We say, “Yes. I know you paid the price for my sins. Lord, you took me by the hand when you should have turned me away! But Jesus, I don’t like my face.”

So where’s the perfect in you? If you have Christ’s forgiveness, He has wiped away the ugliness of your heart. You are declared righteous; you are declared perfect because of Christ. Not Mary Kay.

And now we have the most important message to tell the world, the good news of the gospel, the words that heal nations. There is a balm in Gilead, hope for the broken—and we have God to lead us! We can be lights in this fallen world when the harvest is plentiful, the workers are few…And somehow we can’t step out the door without makeup.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.”

Think about that verse. What’s holding us back? Does God only use the gorgeous ones? This point brings us all back to Sunday school. Who made you? “God.” And in His own image. You are made in God’s image. We have to embrace this fact. We are made in the image of a perfect Creator.

So while even atheists like to say that true beauty is on the inside, it does not come from inside us. His love has been perfected in us! Jesus was perfect when we couldn’t be—we can’t be—and in God’s eyes, the mirror is already repainted.

You will fall, you will stumble, you will look in the mirror and see no more perfection than there is in your life. But by God’s beautiful grace, we can be declared…

Perfect.

I’m not an atheist or a christian (closer to agnostic, really, but with elements of taoism, wicca, and others), so I’m interested in the religious perspective. thank you for your post.
